Coal Baron: The Great Card Game
This is a card game adaptation of the cracking Coal Baron/Glück Auf board game. The theme remains the coal industry, with players producing coal from their mines, loading it on to trains and shipping it out to fulfil orders. The trick is having the right cards to do all of that.
Players have a hand of worker cards, which they deploy to take actions – the more who take the same action, the more expensive it gets. Actions let them mine coal and load it on to railway wagons, take orders, innovations or shares, or add an objective – from which they will score points. Plus adding a locomotive to their train so that they can fulfil orders.
The key to the game is timing: getting in the actions you want while getting in the way of your opponents. Of course they're doing the same, so the whole thing gets pretty tricky. The game cleverly reproduces the feel of the original worker placement board game, gives players significant decisions to make and plays quickly.
Note: this is the bilingual English/German edition of the game using the German title: Glück Auf – Das Grosse Kartenspiel.
