Race 12: USA (Portland, Or) 7 November 2001

Two players were tied for first place in this year's Formula Dé Championship at the start of the final race of the season. But the 'best 8' rule (only a player's best 8 results count) gave Jennie the edge. Any points she scored would improve her total, while Pevans needed at least 3 to increase his. In third place, Chris was worse off. In order to win the Championship, he needed to win the race with Pevans no higher than fifth and Jennie seventh or worse.

The race started with changeable weather. Richard went fast into turn 1 with Jennie, Pevans and Chris behind him, but the other four lagging back. Paul W caught up, but ran into Chris, both taking damage. Chris then ran into all three leaders, damaging Pevans and Richard, and destroying his own car!

Pevans and Richard were first into turn 2, leaving Jennie on the previous straight. The back four were in turn 1, but Mike & Bill caught Jennie by turn 2. Pevans's hard tyres slowed him down and Richard took the lead at turn 3. Jennie, Mike and Bill caught Pevans in turn 3, forming a pack that followed Richard in formation through turn 4.

Mike had been pushing too hard and spun on the exit of turn 5. He recovered happily, but Paul W passed to leave him sixth.

The last of the clouds cleared from the sky as the trio fighting for second place caught Richard at the exit of turn 6 (last). Richard had slowed and then turned into the pits to replace his soft tyres. Jennie took the lead as her hard rubber meant she didn't need to pit. Neither did Pevans in second place. Bill queued up to pit behind Richard.

As Richard and Bill left the pits, Paul W came up and hurtled into turn 1 with them. At the same time Pevans passed Jennie on the exit of turn 1. Mike made it into the pits for fresh boots and Graeme was just leaving turn 6.

Jennie caught Pevans again in turn 2, but Richard reclaimed the lead - taking lumps out of Pevans's car on the way. Jennie went past 'em both into turn 3.

Turn 4 saw Pevans re-take the lead from Jennie, leaving Richard third. Paul W and Bill were together in turn 3, Mike in turn 2 as Graeme left turn 1. Jennie got her nose in front out of turn 4, but overhead the clouds were gathering... Mike spun leaving turn 2 and Graeme caught up with him.

It was nip and tuck between the leading three along the fast back straight and into the slow turn 6. Paul W crashed out at turn 5 leaving Bill unchallenged in fourth place.

Jennie had nothing left in her car and had to take the final corner cautiously. This gave Pevans and Richard the advantage and they left the corner in a higher gear. Pevans had his nose in front on the exit from turn 6 and out-dragged Richard to the line. As he took the chequered flag - and the Championship - the heavens opened. Richard finished second and Jennie third in a cloud of spray.

The other cars tip-toed very carefully round the wet track to finish the race. Except Graeme who slid off the track in turn 6.

Final positions: 1 Pevans (10 points), 2 Richard (6), 3 Jennie (4), 4 Bill (3), 5 Mike (2). DNF: Graeme, Paul W, Chris. This leaves Pevans as this year's Champion.

Race 11: USA (Monterey, Ca) 24 October 2001

Chris made a perfect start (a new rule on me!). Jennie and Chris were first into turn 1 (Andretti Hairpin). Pevans followed them fast, but overcooked it with much smoking rubber. Chris and Jennie entered turn 3 before anyone else had reached turn 2. Chris took the lead in turn 5 as the main pack hit turn 3 - Sebastian and Richard were lagging behind.

Pevans missed turn 5 as the cars began to spread out. Then Rob caught Jennie in turn 6 (The Corkscrew) as Shaun caught Pevans in 5. Richard and Sebastian were still in turn 4. Rob moved into second place at turn 7 with Jennie close behind him. Shaun was in 4th place, just reaching turn 6 and Sebastian was catching Pevans to dispute fifth. Richard, on the other hand, was still last and falling further behind.

Chris pitted a the end of the first lap with a clear lead. As Jennie and Rob went in to the pits, Chris left. Shaun spun at turn 8, allowing Pevans and Sebastian to close. They caught him in turn 9 and all three pitted together (Pevans switching to soft tyres since his hard tyre strategy had failed in the initial hairpin). With Chris in turn 2 and Jennie and Rob leaving the Hairpin (turn 1) the next three moved back out into the pit lane and Richard came in.

Jennie lost it out of turn 1, allowing Rob to close in on Chris. Pevans and Sebastian were side by side into turn 1. Pevans got the best of it, but Shaun ran past. Richard brought up the rear.

Rob caught Chris in turn 4 as Jennie closed back up. Pevans fell behind Shaun at turn 2 and Sebastian and Richard joined him.

Turn 6 saw Chris drop back again, leaving Jennie and Rob disputing the lead. The back markers caught Shaun at turn 4. While Rob and Jennie raced on at the front, Chris dropped further back towards the other four.

Richard lost out on the drag down the back straight and was back in last place at turn 6. Jennie had the oomph to cross the line ahead of Rob for her second win in a row. Pevans and Shaun joined Chris in turn 9 (the last corner) while Richard caught Sebastian in turn 8. Chris out-dragged Pevans to the line for third place. Shaun was fifth, but Richard spun at the last corner to give the final point to Sebastian in sixth place.

Final positions: 1 Jennie (10 points), 2 Rob (6), 3 Chris (4), 4 Pevans (3), 5 Shaun (2), 6 Sebastian (1), 7 Richard (0). Jennie catches Pevans to tie for the lead of the Championship.

Race 10: Germany (Nürburgring) 19 September 2001

With only four participants, each player took 2 cars - however only the first home would score points. 4 cars piled into Turn 1 (Castrol S) together and Jennie's car 2 lost some bodywork. The second half of the grid made a second pack. Pevans's car 1 dropped back at Turn 2 towards the second pack, but only Chris's car 2 joined him. Richard's car 2 joined the middle two in Turn 4 (Dunlop) as Richard's car 1 dropped back at Turn 5. Jennie's car 2 was last into Turn 4.

After some jostling through the middle of the lap, Jennie's car 1 was clear of the field into Turn 7. Pevans's car 1 joined the pack behind her, dropping Richard's car 2. Jennie's car 2 left Pevans's car 2 behind at Turn 6 to join Richard's two. Pevans's car 1 hammered into Turn 8 (Coca-Cola), the last turn, too fast as this very slow corner brought all the cars together.

Pevans's car 1 spun as Jennie's car 1 was first into the pits. Chris's car 2 was next into the pits and out on Jennie's car 1's tail. Chris's car 1 followed suit as Pevans's car 1 blocked the pit lane. Pevans's car 2 and Richard's car 2 were last out of Turn 8. This left all except the first 3 cars in the pits! Both of Richard's cars took an extra turn in the pits as the others left. This did him no harm as the pack of 5 still hit Turn 1 together.

Chris's car 1 caught Jennie's car 1 in Turn 4, only to lose her again. Just behind in Turn 4 Richard's car 1 hurtled up to Chris's car 2. Jennie's car 2 & Richard's car 2 were still in Turn 3 with Pevans's cars inbetween.

As Jennie's car 1 went through Turn 7, Richard's car 1, Chris's car 2 and both Pevans cars were fighting for p3 in Turn 5. Jennie's car 2 was still in Turn 4. By the time Jennie's car 1 made it into Turn 8, it was Pevans's car 1 duelling with Chris's car 1 & 2 for second. Jennie's car 2 was on a charge from the back.

Jennie's car 1 crossed the line as Pevans's car 2 passed Chris's car 1 out of Turn 8 for second. Chris's car 1 took third w/Pevans's car 2 fourth. Chris's car 2 & Jennie's car 2 o'took Richard's car 1 out of Turn 8 for the last points-scoring places.

Final Positions: 1: Jennie (10 points), 2: Pevans (6), 3: Chris (4), 4: Pevans 2 (3), 5: Jennie 2 (2), 6: Chris 2 (1), 7: Richard (0), 8: Richard 2 (0). Note that, for the Championship, only the points from each player's first car are scored.

Race 9: Hungary (Budapest) 15 August 2001

With the rain pouring down all the teams opted for the sensible choice of wet weather tyres. A clean start saw Pevans, Jay and Jennie first into turn 1. But Pevans was alone at the head of the race into turn 2. Turn 2 then saw cars colliding: Michael slid into Chris and was followed by Clive. James fell back to last place.

By turn 6 Pevans had a clear lead. Jennie was just second, leaving turn 4 a nose in front of the rest of the pack: Jay, Richard, Clive, Chris and Michael (taking more damage). These six formed a mobile roadblock, jostling with each other through the next few corners. James brought up the rear, still getting to grips with the game.

At turn 6 Clive dropped back, but he caught up again at turn 7. Jennie, Richard and Chris pulled ahead of the other three at turn 7. The two groups closed together as they left the corner only to spread out again at turn 8.

Jay dropped back to nurse his tyres. Jennie ran out of rubber and spun at turn 10, just as Pevans sprinted out of the final corner (turn 12) and into the pits. Seconds later Pevans was out on the track again with fresh tyres and James had caught up to the pack. Richard and Chris pitted next with Pevans already into turn 1. Clive and Michael were in the last corner, James into turn 11 ahead of Jay and Jennie - who were now disputing last place.

A long pitstop for Chris saw Clive and Michael join him while Richard took off in second place. As these three left the pits James made his stop. Jay was next in, with Jennie at the tail. Halfway through the race and the field was now more widely spread.

After her pitstop Jennie caught Jay at turn 2 as Chris and Clive duelled for third place thru turn 5 - Michael having fallen behind a bit. Chris sneaked ahead into turn 6 only to get the approach to 7 wrong. Still charging, James caught Michael at turn 6 to challenge for fifth; by now Jennie was ahead of Jay.

Richard's attempt to catch up with Pevans failed as he missed the entry to turn 10. Having passed Michael, James caught Chris and Clive before turn 9, but then dropped back again. Jennie ran into Michael in turn 8, damaging his bodywork as Pevans crossed the line to win. Clive overcooked it, racing hard w Chris for third place, and spun through turn 11.

As Richard finished second, Chris powered through turn 12 for third and James passed the recovering Clive. Michael proved to have some car left - enough to pass Jennie at turn 11, anyway. And enough to pass Clive on final straight for fifth place behind James. Clive got the final point and Jennie and Jay both completed the race.

Final Positions: 1: Pevans (10 points), 2: Richard (6), 3: Chris (4), 4: James (3), 5: Michael (2), 6: Clive (1), 7: Jennie (0), 8: Jay (0).

Race 8: Australia (Melbourne) 25 July 2001

With changeable weather, Jennie started the race in pole position. Behind her were Pevans, Jay, Chris, Richard and Bill. Jay was first to damage his car, jostling the leaders on entry to Jones/Brabham (corner 1). Chris caught the front-runners at Whiteford (2) at the cost of some bodywork off his car. Richard and Bill were a turn behind.

Jay slipstreamed past Pevans and into the lead on the next straight, but it was still very close for the front four. Bill caught the pack at the Clark Chicane (4). Jennie and Chris sped away from corner 5 as Bill did himself further damage by hitting Pevans and Richard caught up.

Richard and Jay missed Ascari (corner 6) to split the cars into three groups. Bill ran into the back of Pevans entering the slow final corner (Stewart/Prost - 7) and what was left of his car slid to a halt beside the track.

Still at the front, Chris and Jennie dived into the pits. With his hard tyres in good shape, Pevans ran past the pit lane. Jennie exited ahead of Chris and caught Pevans in turn 1. Richard and Jay both went into the pits well down the field.

Onthe second lap Chris hit Albert Road (corner 3) too fast and went straight on into the gravel. This left Pevans with a clear lead as Jennie dropped back. Jay and Richard were still fighting it out in Whiteford (turn 2), but Jay edged ahead into Albert Road (3).

In turn 5 Jay caught Jennie and then the rain came down. Pevans completed the final corner in second gear with Jay closing on him now that Jennie's tyres had worn out. But Jay had to drop into first gear to survive the last bend. This allowed Pevans to roll unchallenged across the line in a cloud of spray and Jennie to catch up again.

Jennie spun leaving Stewart/Prost (turn 7), so Jay was able to pull away and finish second. Richard made a last effort to catch Jennie, only to spin at the final corner as well. Richard finished fourth behind Jennie.

Final Positions: 1: Pevans (10 points), 2: Jay (6), 3: Jennie (4), 4: Richard (3), DNF: Chris, Bill

Race 7: Japan (Suzuka) 20 June 2001

All six cars got away cleanly and stuck fairly close together through the first few corners. New boys Keith and James were slightly adrift by the S curve (turn 2), but only because they started fifth and sixth. Jennie finally got a clear lead into Spoon (turn 5), only to find she'd damaged her engine on the way. Chris dropped back to the tail-enders.

At the end of the first lap Jennie made it into pits well ahead of everybody else. Keith caught Jay and Pevans at the final corner and sped after Jennie as the other two pitted to replace their soft compound tyres. Jay passed Pevans as they left the pit lane into turn 1. Then it was Chris in the pits while James went past with pristine tyres.

Jennie came out of S curve (turn 2) still ahead of Keith, while Pevans overtook Jay. Keith was caught by Pevans at Degner (turn 3), but went ahead again at Hairpin (4) as Pevans dropped back. This left Jay fighting Pevans for third while James and Chris duelled for fifth.

Kamikaze Jay's race didn't last much longer. He hammered into Spoon (turn 5) in fifth gear and hurtled straight on: into the gravel and out of the race.

Jennie came home with ease in first place. Pevans hit sixth gear in an attempt to take second place from Keith, but in vain. Chris mis-judged the last corner and crashed out, leaving James to cross the line in fourth place.

Final Positions: 1 Jennie (10 points), 2 Keith (6), 3 Pevans (4), 4 James (3). Out: Chris, Jay.

Race 6: Spain (Barcelona) 6 June 2001

Postponed by a couple of weeks, the Spanish Grand Prix got started under the threat of changeable weather. Pevans started 3rd, but was 1st into the first corner (Elf). Jennie & Chris were a gear up and went past him again. Jay was languishing a turn down.

Jennie and Chris led into Seat (turn 4) with Pevans still in 3 (Repsol) and Jay outside turn 3, taking engine damage. The race continued with the front two swapping positions until it rained.

Halfway round, Jay was caught in top gear and spun off. Jennie went into pits first for wet tyres and repairs. Chris was close behind and just needed wet tyres. It was a fast stop for Chris and he had the lead on leaving the pits.

Pevans pitted for tyres next, but got a slow stop. Jay overcooked the final corner and crashed out before he could get fresh tyres.

Chris had a clear lead into Repsol on lap 2 with Pevans lagging well behind Jennie to conserve his tyres. A charge through the middle of the lap saw Pevans catch Jennie in Campsa (turn 6). Pevans overtook on the next straight as the sun came out and the track dried.

With no further incidents, these were the final placings: Chris 1st, Pevans 2nd, Jennie 3rd.

Race 5: Argentina (Buenos Aires) 25 April 2001

Chris managed to grab first place from Jennie early on in the first lap, and held a commanding lead, until Richard took advantage of not needing to pitstop (the only driver on hard tyres) and overtook him for two corners.

Chris then took a major gamble, which paid off, and kept the lead for the rest of the race.

Richard was caught up by the other drivers and the fight for second stayed fierce right up to the finish line, with Richard keeping his hard-won second place.

Jennie unfortunately remembered her MAFF sponsorship, and drove off a corner in order to flatten a cow grazing peacefully by the side of the track.

Race 4: Austria (Zeltweg) 4 April 2001

Pevans was on pole as seven cars started a dry race. A clean getaway from the line, but some smoking tyres in the first corner (Castrol). Engine damage for Pevans on the first straight and then he was rear-ended by Richard on entry to the second corner (Remus) while Chris, Mike and Gareth went past. But Pevans was a gear up to re-take first place down the back straight and enter corner 3 (Gosser) with a clear lead. Richard was last out of Remus as the field spread out. The back five bunched together again at Niki Lauda (turn 5). Gareth went into the back of Mike: this was the last straw for the unlucky Mike as his car fell to pieces.

As Pevans came out of the last corner (9) and went into the pits, Chris dropped back, missing Jochen Rindt (turn 8). The pack was in turn 7 - except for Richard, who was one turn down. Rob caught Chris at the last corner and beat him into the pits as Pevans was away into turn 1 again. Jennie was next into the pits, followed by Gareth as Chris and Rob went back onto the track. Richard pitted last, Gareth and Jennie just leaving the pit lane. A fast getaway meant they caught the two in front at the first corner.

Jennie powered past the pack towards turn 2, Rob moving into third place. Pevans over-egged the back straight and spun out at Gosser (3). Gareth entered the slow Remus corner (number 2) too fast and crashed out. Jennie and Chris out-dragged Rob down the back straight as Pevans pottered towards the Niki Lauda curve (5). Jennie passed Chris at turn 4 with Rob coming up fast.

Pevans continued to limp along as Jennie loomed up in his rear view mirrors and Chris opened a gap in front of Rob. Pevans's luck (and bald tyres) deserted him at turn 8 and he watched the others go past from the gravel trap. Rob uncharacteristically slowed down to preserve what was left of hs car, allowing Richard past into third place.

Race 3: Germany (Hockenheim) 28 February 2001

All ten cars started off successfully - the spray was flying as this was a wet race. Eoin was clean away through the first corner which forced the others to bunch up. Six cars made up the second group into the corner, with three bringing up the tail. Desperate tactics from two tail-enders saw them catch up on the first corner, but Eoin was into the second. Jennie was right behind him. Too close: damage! Next turn Alex slid into Mike, taking a chunk out of him, and Rob damaged himself on the rear of Bill. Richard and Bruce were bringing up the rear at this stage - a turn down on the pack.

Alex powered through the second corner, up into fourth place but taking two bodywork damage. The cars spread out down the straight before the three-stop corner 3. As Jennie powered out of the corner in first place, Mike inflicted some damage on Gareth and Richard on himself. Gareth left the corner in third place, removing bodywork from Pevans's car. Bruce damaged himself on Rob's car in the middle of the corner.

Jennie blocked Eoin into the Agip curve (corner 5), so he went into sixth gear, hurtled past and spun. Alex inflicted more damage on Pevans in the straight, but didn't stop him going past. Rob ran into Bruce on the exit of corner three and his car disintegrated. Bruce also spun leaving Agip, by which time Eoin was entering Opel, seventh and final corner, with Jennie a corner behind.

Eoin took a full pit-stop. Pevans passed Jennie as they left Opel to enter the pits for a full stop too. Jennie was right behind. Mike's lack of brakes left him overshooting Opel and skidding past the pit lane. Meanwhile Alex and Bruce were last, just in Sache curve (corner 8).

Eoin was slow out of the pits, Pevans passing him into the first corner. Despite not pitting, Mike was short of the corner. Jennie was still in the pit lane, Gareth and Bill queuing behind her to get into their pits. With a well-preserved car, Richard stormed down the finish straight and into third place just ahead of Mike.

Eoin was in the wrong gear so Pevans sprinted away from him. Mike just survived the first corner only to be shunted out of the race by Jennie. Bruce was left braking to take Opel. Bill made a bad exit from the pits, allowing Alex to catch him while Bruce limped down the pit lane.

Eoin's low gear let Jennie pass him before corner three - which Pevans was already in, but travelling a bit too fast. Richard's car fell apart thanks to a nudge from Gareth between corners 2 & 3. Eoin and Jennie were fighting for second place, Gareth behind them and the other three scrapping at the back. A good roll saw Eoin catch Pevans at corner 4, leaving Jennie behind. Bruce got ahead of the last two in corner three.

Jennie took engine damage hammering through corner 4 as Eoin nearly took Pevans at Agip. He got him at Sache. Alex and Bill were both damaged in corner 3, Alex taking another chunk out of Bill as she passed him at the exit.

Pevans went back past Eoin at Opel to take the chequered flag. Gareth caught Jennie at Opel and took third place, Jennie cruising in for fourth. Alex got past Bill at 4 and Bruce at Agip, only to overcook it taking Sache in fifth. She crashed off the track spectacularly. Then Bill lost it at Agip, samming into the tyre wall to give Bruce fifth place as the last finisher.

Race 2: UK (Silverstone) 31 January 2001

With ten cars on the starting grid, the start of this race was pretty congested. The jostling on the starting straight resulted in three cars making it into Chapel in front - Eoin still leading from his start in pole position. Three more were bunched just outside the corner, with the other four a bit further back.

The cars closed up in Chapel where Mike and Pevans came together. Chris and Eoin were out of Chapel first only to damage their engines on the straight. Pevans further damaged his bodywork on the exit from Chapel.

Meanwhile Eoin was first into the next corner, Stowe; Chris and Richard behind him. He kept the lead into Club while the middle runners jostled in Stowe - though the sequence was still much as the starting grid.

Pevans was rear-ended in Club, which was terminal for his car! Gareth survived this collision, only to have his car disintegrate at this point on the second lap when he was bumped by Alex.

Race 1: USA (Watkins Glen) 17 January 2001

Eight cars lined up for the first race of the 2001 season. Veteran driver Mike only just made it to the grid in time to start second. Last year's champion, Pevans, started in fifth place and the last place was taken by rookie driver Bruce.

Eoin and Richard had chosen soft compound tyres and used them to good effect in the early corners. By the time the Esses were passed (1/3 lap) the pack was 2 turns behind the leading pair. And Pevans was a turn behind the pack.

Over the rest of the lap the pack spread out. Eoin was first to complete the lap, diving into the pits for a fresh set of soft rubber. Richard followed him and Chris also pitted, switching his tyres to the soft compound. By this time Pevans was up to fourth and hurtled past the pit lane on his worn, but serviceable, hard rubber.

The second lap saw Eoin stay comfortably ahead of Richard who had a good lead over Chris. Mike was initially challenging Pevans for fourth, but was left behind after the Esses. Through the next few corners Pevans powered past Chris and caught up with Richard. The pair swapped second and third places until the final corner. Pevans put his foot down, over-egged it slightly and spun across the track.

With Eoin already finished, Richard stormed down the final straight to take the chequered flag in second place. As Pevans got back on track Chris zoomed past for third. Mike completed the final corner fast enough to catch the accelerating Pevans on the straight and pass him right on the finishing line.

Rob, Jennie and Bruce had fallen behind the rest over the course of the second lap. Bruce pulled ahead, completing the penultimate straight as Rob and Jennie approached it. Jennie, in last place, spun, putting her out of contention for the final point. But Bruce was too bold on the final corners and spun as well, giving Rob a chance to catch up. He accelerated too hard into the final hairpin bend and spun himself.

The last three cars accelerated back to racing speed, but maintained their relative positions. Bruce kept sixth place to the finish for the final points-scoring position. Despite the hard driving in the second half of the race, all eight cars had finished the course.

Report by Pevans with additional material from Bruce.
