The White Castle
What first impressed me with this game was that players have just nine turns apiece. Their aim is to support the Daimyo of the Sakai clan in his impressive, white-walled Himeji castle – depicted on the box in a snowscape, adding to the whiteness. They do this by tending the gardens, training warriors, serving in the castle and so on.
In game terms, you're placing dice and/or workers to power these actions. While also generating the resources you need and adding more worker pawns to/from your personal board. What makes the game is the challenge of working out how to use the actions to let you do several things in a single turn. However, you've still only got those nine turns – the game certainly does not outstay its welcome.
For 1-4 players, aged 12+, playing time 80 minutes: £28.00 (£23.33 tax free outside the UK)
