Bohnanza
This clever little card game was my introduction to designer Uwe Rosenberg's work and it still stands up today. The game is about planting beans (the cards) and harvesting them when you have enough of the same bean in a field.
As you only have two fields and must play beans in the order they are in your hand, this gets tricky. Thinking ahead is very necessary, but you do get the opportunity to trade beans with other players before adding cards to your hand.
The added dimension to the game is the humorous illustrations of the different beans. Thus, the black-eyed bean is a boxer with a black eye. Great fun and tricky to play.
For 3-5* players, aged 10+, playing time 45 minutes: £9.50 (£7.83 tax free outside the UK)
* Other versions of the game support different numbers of players, so please note this.
